Best Pets for College Dorms
What’s a good pet for college? The best answer, of course, is none; college students have a hard time feeding and taking care of themselves, so throwing an animal into that could complicate the equation. For college students looking for a logical pet choice for their dorm though, here is a list of the seven best pets available. Make sure your dorm is alright with these pets before bringing them into your living space!
1: The Goldfish.
A goldfish is relatively easy to maintain and takes little space. Pick up a small aquarium with an air filter and throw in a couple of plants. Change 20% of the water weekly. Enjoy.
You can try out other fish as well, but there are some aquarium pets that just don’t fit the mold. Like the deadly blue-ringed octopus that lives in the Pacific tide pools between Japan and Australia. You get the picture.
2: Tarantula (…or other spider)
Believe it or not, spiders are rather common in the local pet store. The type of spider you’re interested in is up to you and is worthy of a bit of pre-Google research. You’ll be amazed at the entertainment factor of your new best friend’s thick web.
3: Gerbil (or chinchilla!)
A pet gerbil used to be the butt end of every good joke, but college students have since moved on to the understanding of how grand a pal a dorm gerbil can be. If you can get away with something a little bigger, a chinchilla is also another awesome companion.
4: Hamster
Just in case the rodent eyes of the gerbil and chinchilla didn’t catch you, we wanted to make sure you didn’t forget about the infamous hamster. This little guy is melting the hearts of college students everywhere.
5: Fresh water turtle
A fresh water turtle is going to take a much larger tank than a goldfish, but they make for loyal, friendly, indoor pets. Make sure to do your research ahead of time; turtles have some specific care-taking guidelines.
6: Frog
A frog’s environment is subjective to temperature and strict monitoring, so it might not be for every dorm climate. If you think you’re ready to take care of one of these guys though, just look at the face; how can you say no to that kind of face?
7: Snake
A pet snake might frighten your local dorm mates, but they are known for bonding to their owners and establishing strong friendships. Boas are one of many recommended species.
