The U.S. Department of Education released a study last Friday that found distance learning–or hybrid learning (also known as blended learning), where online study is combined with campus-based study–is considered a more efficient approach than traditional, behind-the-desk classrooms.

Accreditation is the process in which a private school, whether they provide campus-based or distance learning, becomes recognized as a prestigious and reputable college.

Colleges accredited by one of the Six Regional Accreditation Agencies provide education recognized by others within the accreditation network. This means transferable units if you decide to attend another school in the future, and more recognition from an employer that understands the accreditation process surrounding private postsecondary education.

Jamie Littlefield of About.com’s Distance Learning page stresses the 10 most critical things you can do to prepare yourself for an online class during the first week of instruction:

1. Determine if you are in over your head.
2. Buy any required texts.
3. Update your computer.
4. Introduce yourself to your new instructor.
5. Participate.
6. Trade e-mail addresses with your peers.
7. Acquaint yourself with the class structure.
8. Record tests and assignments on your calendar.
9. Establish a regular study time.
10. Get a head start on the assigned work.
